Arabian Sea Depression Triggers Yellow Alerts Across Maharashtra – Prime News Network Forecasts Rain Till October 27
Pune: Maharashtra is witnessing an unexpected resurgence of rainfall, with weather systems disrupting the usual post-monsoon predictability. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a lingering Arabian Sea depression is churning up moisture, leading to thunderstorms and unseasonal showers even after the official retreat of the southwest monsoon.
IMD Warns of Rainfall and Thunderstorms – Montha Cyclone Looms Over Bay of Bengal
Issuing a state-wide yellow weather alert, IMD officials noted that the Arabian Sea system is currently driving widespread precipitation over Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan regions, including Goa, with isolated heavy rainfall episodes expected. Flash floods or lightning strikes may accompany thunderstorms, the department warned.
Meanwhile, a more potent system in the Bay of Bengal threatens to evolve into cyclonic storm Montha by October 27. This dual threat of coastal disturbances necessitates extended vigilance, with the Arabian Sea depression influencing western India till mid-week and the eastern system (Montha) impacting southern and eastern states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha from October 25-30.
Pune Under Rain Alert: Thunderstorms Expected for Next 48 Hours
“Thunderstorms with lightning activity will persist in parts of Maharashtra over the next 5 days. The Arabian Sea depression is gradually advancing toward the west coast, enhancing instability due to daytime heating,” explained Sudeep Kumar, PMN meteorological scientist, in an exclusive statement. Light to moderate rains with wind gusts (30-40 kmph) will continue, with Pune under sustained watch until October 26.
Continuity of Arabian Sea Systems: Unusual But Alarming
Highlighting the anomaly, Kumar stated, “While Bay of Bengal cyclones dominate post-monsoon discussions, Arabian Sea disturbances have intensified statistically in recent years. This current system resulted from a low-pressure event emerging from north Tamil Nadu that merged with existing Arabian Sea conditions – a rare occurrence marking [Keyword: Maharashtra weather disruption].”
Alert Zones Across Maharashtra: Which Districts are Affected?
Rainfall alerts now cover Pune, Ahmednagar, Raigad, Mumbai, Nandurbar, Dhule, Palghar, and Thane districts where thunderstorms with gusty winds continue till October 26-27. IMD Mumbai’s detailed forecast emphasizes preparedness as coastal regions brace for sporadic heavy rainfall amid declining monsoon phase.
