The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] organized a protest march to the municipal office on Wednesday in response to an alleged attack on its councillor Saleena Beevi by BJP councillors during a dispute over naming a skill development center after RSS founder K.B. Hedgewar.
The march was blocked by the police in front of the municipal office. CPI(M) district secretary T.K. Noushad inaugurated the protest. Area secretary K. Krishnankutty and district committee member C.P. Pramod also spoke.
CPI(M) leaders warned that the BJP’s attempt to name the skill center after the RSS founder would be met with resistance by parading people.
The Indian Union Muslim League staged a protest in front of the municipal office, condemning the BJP’s decision to name the center after the RSS founder.
Muslim Youth League national vice-president P.P. Anvar Sadath inaugurated the protest. He said the BJP and RSS’ politics of hatred would be countered by upholding democratic values. He noted that when freedom fighters were fighting for India’s independence from the British, the Sangh Parivar was engaged in anti-national activities. He said they would resist efforts to whitewash leaders who worked against the country.
