The UN expert investigating reports of Rohingya refugees being forced off an Indian navy ship into the Andaman Sea found the situation “unconscionable.” The expert, Tom Andrews, urged the Indian government to provide a thorough explanation of the situation. The Rohingya people, who are mostly Muslim, have faced persecution in Myanmar for many years. They are currently living in poorly equipped camps in Bangladesh and face threats of violence and persecution in their home country. The UN expert called on the Indian government to immediately condemn any such breaches of international obligations and stop all deportations to Myanmar.
