Vietnam Seizes Nearly 3 Tons of Smuggled Ivory from South Africa
In a significant move against the illegal ivory trade, police in northern Vietnam have seized nearly 3 tons of ivory smuggled from South Africa. The ivory was found in boxes in a truck early on Saturday morning.
The truck driver, quoted on the police website, stated that he was hired to transport the ivory from southern Dong Nai province to the capital Hanoi. Police declined to provide further details on Monday.
Last year, nearly 7 tons of ivory were seized in Vietnam’s southern commercial hub of Ho Chi Minh City.
Vietnam is a major transit point and consumer of ivory and rhino horn. The country has banned hunting of its own dwindling elephant population.
