A Buddhist monk in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, has made a death threat to a Tamil village officer, causing concern among those hoping for reconciliation in the country. The monk, identified as Ambitiya Sumanaratna Thera, used foul language and referred to the village officers as “Tigers” in Sinhala. This incident could negatively impact ongoing reconciliation efforts. The monk’s remarks were made in the context of a land dispute involving Sinhalese people. The Tamil officers were present for follow-up action. A senior government official in Colombo stated that such incidents would not be tolerated and that an impartial investigation would be conducted. The Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA) has criticized the monk’s actions, stating that they are profaning a religion of peace and disgracing the memory of champions of civility and reconciliation. The CPA also noted that the disturbing events come at a time when the country is still less than halfway through political and constitutional reforms.
