Pakistan and India may temporarily recall their high commissioners and scale down diplomatic staff sizes due to a recent diplomatic spat over espionage. A media report from Friday suggested that tensions came after a Pakistani High Commission staff member was detained by Indian police for espionage. The matter has escalated with both countries naming the other’s diplomats. Mahmood Akhtar, a visa officer working for the Pakistani High Commission, was expelled from India and claimed to be an informant for the RAW and IB. This incident led to India withdrawing several Pakistani diplomats from New Delhi, backed by transferred staff allegations. Pakistan, in turn, accused eight officials posted in the Indian High Commission of working under cover. The officials are working without official knowledge they are secret agents.
