Breaking News: Waqf Amendment Act under Scrutiny

The Waqf (Amendment) Act has sparked controversy, with several claiming it to be unconstitutional or harmful to their faith. In an exclusive interview with Indian Express, mukhtar abbas naqvi, a former union minister and BJP leader, defended the amendment, asserting its necessity for administrative reforms without interfering with religious practices.
—he emphasized that "India is a land of reforms," embracing the amendments to address existing administrative issues. "These reforms do not infringe on matters of faith and will ensure transparency and clarity in the Waqf system."

‘ Although some perceive these amendments as religious concerns, Naqvi refutes this, stating that "India is a nation of reforms," including those in social, economic, and administrative spheres.’ he adds, "Anti-Waqf acts are driven by communal fears and misunderstandings, and we need to recalibrate these perspectives."

Feeling affected by interpretations of the Waqf Act**
Some in the Muslim community have raised objections related to delays in property registration and the system’s applicability to tribals. Other critics argue that the legislation should extend its reach, including tribal lands and the practice of Islamic conversions, suggesting that mandated proof of residency or faith could restrict freedom of religious conversion.

For all the concerns raised, the stance is clear.”

—he believes that adjusting the Act “is essential for national unity and the private stakeholders who benefit from the Waqf system.” he concludes, *"We cannot afford to be reactive in applying religious laws. Every reform must be in line with the Constitution and ensure that everyone’s rights, including that of minorities, are protected."
