Bangladesh High Court Upholds Death Sentences in Narayanganj Case

The Bangladesh High Court has upheld death sentences for 15 convicts, including a former Awami League member and three former RAB officers, in a case involving the abduction and murder of seven people in Narayanganj, three years ago.

In 2014, the brutal killing of seven individuals, including City Corporation Councillor Nazrul Islam and senior lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarkar, shocked the nation. Among those sentenced to death are Nur Hossain, a former Awami League member, and Lt. Col. Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, the then commanding officer of RAB-11.

The High Court also commuted the death penalties awarded to 11 others to life imprisonment. A local court had previously found 35 people, including Hossain and 25 former RAB officials, guilty of the charges. Of these, 26 were sentenced to death, and nine others to imprisonment.

According to the chargesheet, Hossain had enmity with Nazrul Islam over city corporation issues and paid local RAB officers for the abduction and murder. He later fled to Kolkata but was caught and returned by West Bengal police.

This case highlights the severe consequences of violent crimes and the importance of justice in Bangladesh.
