India’s Bribery Rate Surpasses Other Asian Nations

According to a survey conducted by Transparency International, the percentage of Indians who gave bribes to access public services was the highest among Asian nations. Nearly half of the surveyed Indians reported that corruption had been increasing in the country over the past year. Between March 2019 and September 2020, 20,000 adults in 17 Asian countries were surveyed.

The chart shows that in India, 39% of those surveyed gave bribes to use public services, the highest rate among Asian nations. Additionally, about 89% of Indians surveyed felt that government corruption was a significant issue.

The chart also indicates that about 47% of Indians surveyed reported that corruption had increased over the past year, making it the sixth highest among Asian nations.

The charts highlight the bribery rates in essential public services. In India, the bribery rate was the highest when people applied for identity documents and availed themselves of utility services, and the second highest when they accessed public health services.

Moreover, 18% of Indians reported being offered bribes or special favours to vote for a party in national, regional, or local elections in the past five years. This share was the highest in Thailand and the fourth highest in India among Asian nations.
