The meeting took place just two days after the Centre announced that caste enumeration would be included in the upcoming population census for the first time since independence. The CWC also convened on April 24th following the Pahalgam terror attack.
Former Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed his support for the government’s decision to include caste details in the census. He emphasized the need for accountability and urged the prime minister to act firmly against the perpetrators of the 22 April attack, which resulted in the deaths of 26 people, mostly tourists.
Gandhi welcomed the government’s sudden decision to include caste enumeration, which had been opposed for 11 years. However, he insisted that the Centre should set a timeline for its implementation. He also suggested that the government should follow the same approach as with the women’s bill, demanding a specific date for the caste census.
The leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha stated that the pressure from the Congress had successfully pressured the government into including caste details in the census.
