The allegations of corruption in the 2010 CWG led to a significant political uproar, resulting in numerous criminal and money-laundering cases, including the current one. Kalmadi and others were accused of misconduct in awarding and executing two important contracts for the games. Special Judge Sanjeev Aggarwal noted that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had already closed the corruption case, which the Enforcement Directorate (ED) used to start its money-laundering probe. The judge acknowledged the ED’s submission that the money-laundering offense could not be proven during its investigation. The sole money-laundering investigation was initiated by the ED based on the CBI’s case, which filed a closure report in January 2014 stating that no incriminating evidence surfaced during the investigation and the allegations in the FIR could not be substantiated against the accused.
