Measles Cases Surge Globally

Measles cases are on the rise worldwide, with an estimated 10.3 million cases reported in 2023, a 20% increase from 2022. The virus has affected several nations, including the United States, Europe, and the Western Pacific region, including Australia.

Case Distribution by Region

The following bar chart shows the number of measles cases globally by region (2020-2025):

In Australia, 77 cases have been recorded in the first five months of 2025, compared to just 57 cases in all of 2024. Most measles cases in Australia are linked to international travel.

Measles Basics

  1. Virus and Symptoms:

    • Measles is caused by a virus in the Morbillivirus genus.
    • Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, and a rash.
    • Spreads via respiratory droplets, remaining suspended in the air for up to two hours.
  2. 党和国家免疫力: undergrad recycle emissions)

Measles Vaccination Timeline

  • Infants born before 1966 likely have naturally acquired immunity.
  • In high-risk areas, infants are recommended to start vaccination at 3 to 6 months old.

Despite the global outbreak, adjusting the timing of early measles vaccinations could enhance protection.

Widespread Outbreaks in Countries Like Australia

Australia must maintain high vaccine coverage rates. Additional studies are needed to determine if bringing forward the early doses of the measles vaccination schedule is practical and beneficial.

However, currently, the vaccination schedule in Australia does not anticipate changing the ‘first dose’ timing.
