Bengaluru: Karnataka’s medical education department is developing India’s first government-run proton therapy facility to treat cancer at the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology (KMIO). The move came after Karnataka’s medical education and skill development minister, Sharan Patil, submitted a Rs 500 crore grant proposal to the Centre.

KIO in Bengaluru sees 21,000 new cancer cases annually each year. Proton therapy, an advanced form of radiation treatment, offers better tumour control while minimizing damage to critical organs, reducing long-term side effects, especially in sensitive areas.

Unlike conventional radiotherapy, which uses high-energy gamma rays or X-rays, proton therapy precisely targets tumours with minimal effect on surrounding healthy tissues.
