Safdarjung Hospital Achieves Robotic Surgery Milestone

New Delhi: Safdarjung Hospital has achieved a significant milestone in its robotic surgery program with the successful removal of a giant adrenal tumour from a 36-year-old woman. The tumour, measuring 18.2 x 13.5 cms, is the largest ever removed robotically in a minimally invasive manner.

Medical Superintendent Dr Sandeep Bansal informed that the surgery was conducted by Professor Dr Pawan Vasudeva, along with Dr Niraj Kumar and Dr Avishek Mandal. The anaesthesia team consisted of Dr Sushil, Dr Bhavya, and Dr Megha.

The surgery was challenging due to the tumour’s massive size and its dangerous adherence to critical body structures, including the Inferior Vena Cava, the Liver, and the Right kidney. Dr Vasudeva emphasized the importance of precise dissection and the 3D Vision of the Da Vinci robot, which allows for greater precision than laparoscopy.

The surgery lasted over three hours, and the tumour was completely removed without any complications. Post-operative recovery was uneventful, and the patient was discharged in three days.

Robotic surgery offers numerous benefits, including small keyhole incisions, precise work, reduced postoperative pain, and a faster return to work. If this surgery had been performed by an open route, it would have required a skin incision of more than 20 cms, with subsequent healing taking several weeks.

Dr Sandeep Bansal said that this milestone showcases Safdarjung Hospital’s expertise in robotic surgery and its dedication to delivering cutting-edge quality healthcare free of cost to all patients.

This complex robotic surgery, performed free of cost at Safdarjung Hospital, would have cost upwards of a few lakhs in the private sector.
