Title: Narmada Dam is Full for the Fifth Time, Leads to Increased Water Release, Alert for Areas Around the River Banks
Date: 23 June 2024
In early morning around 1 AM on Sunday, 23rd, the water level of Narmada Dam reached its peak, marking the fifth time this year when the dam reached its full capacity. The water level had touched 138.68 meters, and there was a precipitation of 68 mm, with 1.12 lakh cusecs of water being released currently. The officials have issued an alert for the people living in the areas along the river banks of Narmada to stay cautious and aware.
The water level of Narmada has been rising due to continuous rainfall in its catchment areas. The dam was already nearly full when additional water surged in, causing it to overflow. The continuous inflow of water is between 1.15 to 1.16 lakh cusecs, and the recorded rainfall in 5 days stands at 882 mm. The water discharge was over 7.5 lakh cusecs in the last 12 days, and due to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas, the dam is experiencing high inflows.
The Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNL) has coordinated with officials of Bharuch district to ensure the safety of the people living in the areas around the river banks. The local administration is continuously monitoring the situation and making all necessary arrangements.
With Narmada Dam reaching its full capacity for the fifth time this year, the administration is on high alert. The water levels are being continuously monitored, and residents in the surrounding areas are being urged to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions. The SSNL is ensuring that all safety measures are in place to handle the increased release of water, and the local administration is actively working to keep the public informed and safe.
