Robert Eggers, the popular horror filmmaker, is gearing up to direct and write a new version of Charles Dickens’ iconic novella “A Christmas Carol.” The adaptation could see Dafoe and Eggers collaborating for the first time.
Dafoe, known for his role in “The Irishman,” has been linked to the lead role of Scrooge. If this initial report holds true, it would mark Dafoe’s fourth co-star project with Eggers, after “Nosferatu,” “The Northman,” and “Napoleon Dynamite.”
“A Christmas Carol,” first published in 1842, tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, who discovers the true meaning of Christmas after a ghost appears to him. The story has been adapted numerous times, from theatrical productions to animated films, and has been adapted into TV series as well.
Meanwhile, Eggers is expected to also produce “A Christmas Carol,” and Christopher Columbus is said to be producing alongside his sister Eleanor. Eggers, who achieved widespread acclaim with “Nosferatu,” is set to next shoot “Werewolf” for Focus Features before tackling the “A Christmas Carol” project.
