On May 9, 2025, production house Vyjayanthi Movies is re-releasing the Chiranjeevi-Sridevi Telugu socio-fantasy drama "Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari" in 2D and 3D formats in more than 150 screens, marking its 35th anniversary. The film, directed by K Raghavendra Rao and featuring Chiranjeevi as a guardian of four children and Sridevi as the daughter of Lord Indra, was released on May 9, 1990, during a severe cyclone in Andhra Pradesh. The film became a blockbuster and was a game-changer for producer C Ashwini Dutt and the production house.
Once More, on the Large Screen
Several films have been re-released in recent years, including Pokiri by Puri Jagannadh, Simhadri by SS Rajamouli, Kushi by Pawan Kalyan, Venky by Ravi Teja, Arya 2 by Sukumar and Allu Arjun, Jersey by Gowtam Tinnanuri, Yevade Subramanyam by Nag Ashwin, Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi by Tharun Bhascker, and Happy Days by Sekhar Kammula. These re-releases have been made possible by technical teams that restore and digitize old films, often from old negatives that are lost or damaged.
Film Restoration
Prasad Laboratories began the restoration process, cleaning the weathered reels and scanning them for digitization. The restored film was first digitized in 8K and then converted to 4K format for theatrical projection. Prime Focus oversaw the 3D conversion. The re-release has been well-received, with enthusiastic ticket bookings and a nostalgic atmosphere among audiences.
Future Re-releases
Next up is Rajamouli and NTR Jr’s "Yama Donga," expected to arrive on May 18. The trend of re-releasing older hits is unlikely to fade any time soon, with producer Shobu Yarlagadda hinting at the possibility of re-releasing the "Baahubali" films to mark a decade of the movie.
