Kovarty: A Short Film That Blends Love and Magical Realism
In a whimsical twist, a typewriter falls in love with its typist in "Kovarty," a Malayalam short film directed by Rohin Raveendran Nair. This charming film, selected for the MAMI Mumbai Film Festivals MAMI Select: Filmed on iPhone programme, showcases the magic of storytelling through a typewriter’s perspective.
Premiered in Mumbai a few weeks ago, "Kovarty" is set in Thozhuthilmukku, a village of the 1980s. A typewriter arrives at the sub-registrars office, delighting Daisy (Rajisha Vijayan), a new employee and typist. She names it Qwerty, which later becomes Kovarty for others. Daisy, heartbroken after her typewriter lover abandons her, finds happiness in her relationship with the machine. Meanwhile, Chacko, the sexton of the village church, secretly loves Daisy and learns about her secret, leading to serious repercussions.
Written by Rohin and Vimal Gopalakrishnan, "Kovarty" beautifully blends love and magical realism. The film, just over 30 minutes long, was shot at Kavalam in Alappuzha district, chosen for its untouched interiors. The crew, comprising names from Malayalam and other industries, includes production designer Sreelekshmy Sreekumar and costume designer Gayathri Kishore.
Rajisha Vijayan was the only choice to play Daisy, due to her body of work and the role’s novelty. The film’s unique shots, celebrating the milieu and the typewriter’s interior, make it a captivating watch. Using plumeria flowers in the narrative, Rajisha wears one every day on her braided hair, adding charm to the storytelling.
Rohin Raveendran Nair, a seasoned technician, directed the film. He has worked on various projects, including the critically-acclaimed "The Booth" and the documentary "Testimony of Ana," which won the National award for the Best Non-Feature Film in 2022. His recent work includes the Netflix series "Decoupled."
Kovarty is streaming on YouTube. Stay tuned for more updates and enjoy the delightful tale of love and magic.
