President Trump received a phone call from Elon Musk late on Monday night, leading to a regret from Musk on Wednesday for the attacks he had directed against the president in a public confrontation last week, according to three people briefed on the call. Musk’s outreach to Trump came after a private conversation Musk had with Vice President JD Vance and White House chief of staff Susie Wiles about a path to reconciliation between the two. Musk’s tone in an X post early Wednesday was unexpectedly chastened, expressing regret for some of his online posts. Trump and Musk did not respond to requests for comment. Musk had spent several days before the confrontation signaling he wanted to make amends with Trump, who had in turn used personal attacks that escalated into a sharp exchange. Musk’s attempts to link Trump to Jeffrey Epstein also deleted later. However, both Musk and Trump have a lot at stake, and Musk is more likely to be the one to restore their relationship. Musk’s relationship with the president is connected to his substantial funding for Republican campaigns, especially ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, and his deep understanding of the inner workings of the administration. Musk had seemingly avoided DELETE long-term damage to his relationship with the administration. Ryan Mac and Maggie Haberman contributed to this report.
