News Article: Indias Most Prominent Congress Leader Criticizes Stampede Tragedy in Bengaluru
Former Indian National Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has expressed significant concern over the recent stampede near the Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium in Bengaluru, India, which claimed 11 lives during the IPL’s 2025 finals.
Tharoor referenced the stampede as "tragic" on Wednesday (June 4, 2025) during an interview with PTI Video in Washington. He indicated that his thoughts are with the families of the victims and suggested the need to develop different approaches to crowd control and management, emphasizing that a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is required for such high-move events, as the Karnataka state’s Home Minister recently announced.
The incident occurred during celebrations for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) victory in the Indian Premier League 2025. Tharoor also criticized the public for not being adequately prepared for large crowds, stating, "The saddest thing about our excitement and buzz of our population is that we are not good at crowd control."
In a statement at home, the Karnataka State Home Minister, G. Parameshwara, stated that the government would implement a new SOP, aimed at preventing any untoward incidents in the state to ensure a safer environment.
