New Delhi, 4 Jun, 2025: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare (AI-CoE) with a focus on developing AI-based solutions to support key national health programs.
Last year, the two premier institutions were awarded a ₹330 crore grant under the ‘Make AI in India, Make AI Work for India’ initiative, part of the Ministry of Education’s ‘Make AI in India’ initiative. This grant aim to harness the power of AI for accessible and affordable healthcare.
“This MoU marks the beginning of deep, far-reaching collaborative research that has the potential to transform the healthcare landscape in this country,” said M Srinivas, director of AIIMS Delhi.
Rangan Banerjee, director of IIT Delhi, expressed his delight at the possibility of shaping this national centre of excellence. He stated, “We look forward to guiding the marriage of healthcare with technology, keeping patients at the centre of this effort, and aiming to build mechanisms that will benefit every citizen of our country.”
The Centre is committed to developing cutting-edge AI solutions, upskilling healthcare providers, and improving healthcare access in remote and marginalized areas. The AI-CoE will be co-led by Krithika Rangarajan, the chief project manager at AIIMS Delhi, and Chetan Arora, the chief project manager at IIT Delhi.
The team aims to establish the AI-CoE as a key research and resource centre at national and international levels, promising a new era of progress in AI-driven healthcare. The institution is dedicated to creating transformative outcomes that will impact the lives of Indians.
