Geneva: WHO Reports Last Gaza Hospital for Cancer and Cardiac Care Ceases Functioning
The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Thursday that the last hospital in Gaza providing cancer and cardiac care has ceased functioning after an Israeli attack. UN health agency chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported on X that an attack on Tuesday severely damaged and rendered the European Hospital in Khan Yunis inaccessible.
Tedros stated that the hospital is "no longer functional," with a WHO team evacuating emergency medical staff who had worked through the attacks. He added that the hospital’s closure has cut off vital services, including neurosurgery, cardiac care, and cancer treatment, which are unavailable elsewhere in Gaza.
The WHO chief also highlighted the impact of the closure, noting that it ends the facility’s role as a key hub for medical evacuations, further straining the overwhelmed health system. Doctors Without Borders (MSF) charity also emphasized the closure’s impact, stating that the Nasser hospital is now the only functioning hospital in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza.
Nasser was also hit on the same day a few hours before the Gaza European Hospital was struck for the second time in less than two months. MSF said that the territory’s remaining hospitals are mostly partially functional and constantly overwhelmed.
Tedros insisted that "hospitals must be protected," emphasizing that they must never be militarized or targeted. He declared, "Ceasefire."
