Afghan Girl Deported to Afghanistan
A famous Afghan refugee girl, known for her striking green eyes, has been deported to Afghanistan. According to a government official, Sharbat Gula and her four children were handed over to Afghan authorities at the Torkham border crossing, about 60 km northwest of the Pakistani city of Peshawar.
Ms. Gula was arrested in late October on charges of carrying fake Pakistani ID papers and staying in Pakistan illegally. A Peshawar court later ordered her deportation.
In 1984, Ms. Gula gained international fame as an Afghan refugee girl after a photograph of her, taken by war photographer Steve McCurry, was published on the cover of National Geographic. In 2002, Mr. McCurry found her again, and in 2014, she went into hiding after authorities accused her of buying fake Pakistani documents.
