Adieu Skype! Iconic App Shuts Down: What Happens to Your Data & How to Transition to Microsoft Teams
SHARE

Skype, a video conferencing platform from Microsoft, has been shut down on May 5, 2025, marking the end of an era. Microsoft has announced the replacement of Skype with Microsoft Teams, a fully equipped platform for modern communication and collaboration.

Why is Microsoft shutting down Skype?

Microsoft decided to discontinue Skype because of its declining relevance. Since Microsoft acquired the platform in 2011, many new platforms have become more popular among users. Additionally, Microsoft is shifting its focus towards integrating all its communication tools into a single platform that adapts to the demands of the modern workplace. This comprehensive strategy prioritizes Teams, which Microsoft believes represents the digital future.

Advantages of Teams over Skype

Microsoft Teams is more advanced than Skype by providing many features of Skype, including one-on-one and group calls, messaging, and file sharing. Teams also supports file sharing, meeting, streaming calendar, and a community hub for free.

How to shift to Teams

Microsoft has provided an alternative for those who do not wish to migrate their data to Teams. Skype users can export their data, such as contacts, chats, and call history, and then migrate to Microsoft Teams’ free version through their Skype credentials. Users must log in to Teams using their Skype account details, and their old chats, contacts, and other data will be shown in the Teams app. This allows users to continue calling and chatting with people on their Skype account until May 5.
