Since the Mahayuti government returned to power in Maharashtra last December, its flagship Mukhya Mantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana has faced increasing scrutiny. The scheme, which aims to provide financial assistance to women, has been criticized for diverting funds meant for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat, a Shiv Sena leader, has accused the Finance Department of diverting funds meant for SCs and STs for the Ladki Bahin program. Shirsat’s comments come after the BJP, which is the ruling party, has been accused of overlooking the issues between the Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The BJP has dismissed Shirsat’s comments, saying that complaining is a “second nature” of the party and its ministers. The government has acknowledged that financial discipline and fulfilling promises made before the elections will be a daunting task. However, questions remain about the Ladki Bahin scheme, which was credited with the Mahayuti’s landslide win. The government has declared five lakh beneficiaries of the scheme as ineligible, and the scheme has faced complaints of delay and non-adherence to norms. The government has assured that everyone registered in the scheme will get their money soon.
