Sushil Chaudhary: Reviving the Indian Theatrical Ecosystem
Days after superstar Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan suggested building more theaters and offering cheaper ticket rates, new exhibitor Sushil Chaudhary is advocating for a more accessible and affordable cinema experience. Chaudhary, founder and CEO of PictureTime, believes that cinema should be a basic necessity, similar to food and clothing. He aims to keep capital and operational costs under Rs 1 crore and Rs 2 lakhs, respectively.
At WAVES 2025, Chaudhary discussed the need to increase cinema availability and showcased his innovative approach by setting up inflatable theaters in remote areas where people have no access to movies. He highlighted the success of his screenings of films like "Pathaan," "Gadar 2," and "Jawan" in remote regions, where audiences were willing to pay for the experience.
Chaudhary also emphasized the importance of "clever programming" to optimize revenue. He re-released old films to cater to viewers who watch a movie multiple times, and he believes that filmmakers should address piracy to prevent significant financial losses. The key issues facing the industry are accessibility, affordability, and outreach.
