Can 100 Humans Defeat a Gorilla? Experts Weigh In

The internet is abuzz with a viral debate: can 100 unarmed humans defeat a single silverback gorilla? Scientists, conservationists, and psychologists have weighed in on this intriguing question.

Oleksandr Usyk, the heavyweight boxing champion, confidently said yes, but experts took a more nuanced view.

Primatologist Tara Stoinski of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund explained that while gorillas are undoubtedly stronger than any individual human, their endurance is limited. "It’s just an issue of sheer numbers," she said. "Humans could use planning and waves of attacks to wear the gorilla down."

Professor Stacy Rosenbaum from the University of Michigan agreed, noting that gorillas aren’t endurance fighters and would tire quickly. "The group should be able to overtake the gorilla… but they must expect death and serious injury," he warned.

Psychologist John Drury emphasized the importance of social dynamics and self-preservation. "Collective action might help humans win, but it depends on trust. Team spirit is based on shared identity," he said.

However, some experts, like conservation scientist Michelle Rodrigues, highlighted the absurdity of the question. "Gorillas are not only gentle giants but socially wired not to fight without cause. It’s not a fair fight," she said.

Experts broadly agreed that 100 coordinated humans could theoretically subdue a gorilla, but not without fatal losses. More importantly, as Stoinski stressed, "the real question" is not about beating gorillas but saving them from extinction.
