United Nations: Pakistan Seeks Security Council Meeting

Pakistan has expressed its right to seek a meeting of the United Nations Security Council when tensions rise with India, following the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people. Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, said the Security Council has the mandate to discuss serious regional and international security issues.

Ahmad emphasized that the Security Council should convene when appropriate, citing the evolving situation in Jammu and Kashmir. He noted that discussions with other Security Council members have been ongoing, and Pakistan has the right to convene a meeting when it feels it is necessary.

Greece, the current President of the UN Security Council, expressed readiness to convene a meeting "sooner rather than later" to address the tensions between India and Pakistan. The Security Council could provide an opportunity to express views and help diffuse tensions, as Greece voiced concern over rising tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors and called for de-escalation and dialogue.

Pakistan’s Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif, recently made controversial remarks in a TV interview, stating that Pakistan has been "doing dirty work" for the West. However, the Security Council’s response to these comments is not yet clear.

The Security Council’s agenda under Greece’s presidency includes discussions on the situation between India and Pakistan, and any requests for meetings or consultations on the issue will be addressed accordingly.
