Thirty-two well-educated and elite Sri Lankan Muslims have joined the Islamic State in Syria, according to the Justice Minister. This comes as President Maithripala Sirisena has been criticized for failing to curb religious hate speech amid the emergence of both Muslim and Buddhist extremist groups. The minister stated that these individuals are not from ordinary families, but rather from those considered well-educated and elite. He also mentioned that the government is aware of some foreigners coming to Sri Lanka to spread Islamic extremism. The minister emphasized that the law of the country is no different to Buddhist monks or ordinary people, and that they will not allow extremism to spread in the country.
