New Delhi: India’s coal production in April 2025 reached 81.57 million tonnes, marking a 3.63% increase from the previous year. The Coal Ministry reported steady growth in coal production and dispatch, highlighting the efforts of the Ministry of Coal and its subsidiaries to ensure consistent supply and operational stability.

Captive/other entity mines produced 14.51 million tonnes in April 2025, up from 11.46 million tonnes in the same period last year. This surge underscores the growing contribution of captive mining to India’s overall coal output.

Total coal dispatch in April 2025 was 86.64 million tonnes, up from 85.11 million tonnes in April 2024. By April 30, 2025, coal stock held by coal companies had increased to 125.76 million tonnes, up from 102.41 million tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous year.

At Coal India Limited (CIL), the total coal stock stood at 105 million tonnes in FY 2025-26, marking a 22.10% growth from 86.60 million tonnes in the same period last year. This reflects an impressive annual growth rate of 22.8%, underscoring the coal sector’s robust performance and efficiency.

The Ministry of Coal aims to achieve sustainable growth and improve coal availability, reducing dependence on imports. India achieved a historic milestone by crossing one billion tonnes of coal production on March 20 in FY 2024-25, surpassing the previous fiscal year’s 997.83 million tonnes. With the fifth-largest coal reserves and the second-largest consumer, coal remains crucial, contributing 55% to the national energy mix and fueling over 74% of total power generation.
