Google Launches AI Co-Scientist Tool for Research Assistance

New Delhi: Google has introduced an AI system called "AI co-scientist," built on Gemini 2.0, to assist scientists in developing new research hypotheses and plans. According to the company, researchers can use natural language to specify a research goal, such as understanding the spread of a disease.

The AI co-scientist will then suggest testable hypotheses, provide a summary of relevant literature, and propose potential experimental approaches. This collaborative tool aims to help experts refine their research, not to automate the scientific process.

Early access to the AI co-scientist is being provided to scientists in Google’s Trusted Tester Program, the company added.

What Google CEO Sundar Pichai Has to Say

In a post on X, Pichai said, "accelerating science and discovery is one of the most profound applications of AI and I’m really excited to see where this research will go."

Introducing our AI co-scientist, a multi-agent AI system built with Gemini 2.0.

We think of it as a virtual collaborator for scientists, using advanced reasoning to synthesize a huge amount of literature, generate novel hypotheses, and suggest detailed research plans. We’re seeing promising early results in important research areas like liver fibrosis treatments, antimicrobial resistance, and drug repurposing. As a next step, we’re opening up a trusted tester program for scientists around the world.
