Faraaz Ayaaz Hossain, a Bangladeshi hostage killed in the Holey Cafe attack, posthumously awarded Mother Teresa Memorial International Award for Social Justice

Faraaz Ayaaz Hossain, one of the three Bangladeshi hostages killed in the Holey Cafe attack in Dhaka on July 1, was posthumously awarded the Mother Teresa Memorial International Award for Social Justice for 2016 by the Harmony Foundation in Mumbai.

The award was conferred on Faraaz’s behalf by the Foundation’s President Abraham Mathai. This is the first time the award has been given posthumously.

In a press conference in Mumbai on Saturday, Faraaz’s mother Simeen Hossain said, "Those who killed my son were devils and terrorists. My son, who stood by his friends and refused to leave them, represented true Islam."

Harmony Foundation President Abraham Mathai said, "Faraaz was a great human and a brave man. We are proud to have honored him."

The Mother Teresa Memorial International Award was first introduced in 2005 with Medecines Sans Frontieres receiving it that year. Other recipients include Nobel laureate Malala Yousufzai, Dalai Lama, former Prime Minister of Malaysia Dr. Mahathir Mohammed, and Baroness Caroline Cox.

Faraaz was a graduate of Oxford College of Emory University and a student at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School in Atlanta. He had come to Dhaka for his summer holidays and was scheduled to return to the U.S. in August.
