A week before Raheel Sharif’s retirement as Pakistan Army chief, a lawyer has challenged a lower court’s dismissal of a request to elevate him to Field Marshal rank. The lawyer, Adnan Mazari, is a member of the Rawalpindi Bar Association and has filed the case against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the Defence Ministry. Mazari argues that the Field Marshal title is of national interest and that the Islamabad High Court’s decision is illegal, unlawful, and unconstitutional. He contends that Raheel Sharif’s outstanding performance and dedication to the country should be recognized with the title. The lawyer also mentions that Pakistan has seen a significant decrease in terrorism in recent years, with a 45% reduction in attacks and a 38% reduction in deaths compared to the previous year. Raheel Sharif will retire on November 29 and will pass the baton of command to the next army chief at the end of the month.
