Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Appoints New Commissioner
R. V. Karnan, the former commissioner of the State Food Safety department, has been transferred to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). Karnan, who conducted extensive checks on hygiene conditions in restaurants and food outlets across Telangana, was one of several IAS officers reshuffled by the State government on Sunday.
Karnan was the commissioner of the State Food Safety department, which falls under the Health and Family Welfare department. He was also the director of this department. From January to November 2024, the Food Safety department conducted over 4,652 inspections across upscale pubs, restaurants, ice cream parlours, eCommerce dark stores, and other establishments in Hyderabad. The department regularly posted details of these inspections and violations on its X handle.
Karnan is now posted as the commissioner of the GHMC, which oversees Town Planning, Urban Biodiversity, Property Tax, and Entomology. The corporation also has a Food Safety Wing. S. Sangeeta Satyanarayan has been appointed as the director of the Health and Family Welfare department.
